You may hear that AI is “trained on data.” This article explains what training data means and why it matters—in plain, easy-to-understand terms.
“Training data” is the information AI systems study so they can learn how language, images, or patterns work. This data can include books, articles, and other publicly available information.
AI does not memorize information like a database. Instead, it learns general patterns—such as how sentences are formed or how questions are usually answered.
Because training data can vary, different AI tools may give different responses. This is another reason why AI results should always be reviewed by people before being used.
AI is good at some tasks and not so good at others. This article explains what AI tools are best used for and where people still need to take the lead.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is best at helping with tasks that involve patterns, repetition, or organizing information. It can save time, reduce manual work, and help explain complex topics more clearly.
AI can help with:
Writing first drafts
Summarizing information
Organizing data
Answering common questions
AI is not good at:
Making final decisions
Understanding emotions or context
Replacing professional judgment
Taking responsibility for outcomes
Knowing what AI can and cannot do helps people use it safely and effectively.

The City of Tamarac will soon add Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to the online Utility Billing portal to enhance security and better protect customer account information when logging in to manage water bill payments.
New Security Step Coming Soon for Utility Billing Portal
The City of Tamarac will soon implement an additional security measure for the online Utility Billing portal used by customers to manage and pay water bills.
In the coming weeks, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) will be added to the login process for the Utility Billing portal. MFA provides an additional layer of protection for customer accounts by requiring a one-time verification code in addition to a username and password.
When this feature is enabled, customers logging into the Utility Billing portal will receive a one-time verification code sent to the email address associated with their account. Entering this code will confirm the user’s identity and allow access to their account.
Why this change is being implemented:
• Adds an additional layer of protection for customer accounts• Helps prevent unauthorized access if login credentials are compromised• Aligns with modern cybersecurity best practices for online services
Customers who are currently logged in will not be affected immediately. The verification step will only appear the next time a customer logs in after MFA is enabled.
Additional information and updates about the implementation timeline will be shared on the City website.
The City of Tamarac remains committed to protecting customer information and ensuring the continued security of our online services.

The City of Tamarac has been named a finalist in the 2026 IDC Smart Cities North America Awards for Intelligent Community Engagement, recognizing our AI-powered platform that enhances event discovery, civic participation, and economic vitality.
The City of Tamarac is proud to announce that we have been selected as a finalist in the 2026 IDC Smart Cities North America Awards in the category of Intelligent Community Engagement. This prestigious recognition honors innovative municipalities that leverage technology to strengthen civic participation, improve service delivery, and enhance economic development.
Tamarac was recognized for its AI-Powered Community Engagement Platform, a centralized digital experience that transforms how residents and visitors discover events, programs, and community activities. Launched in April 2025, the platform brings together events from City departments, parks and recreation, libraries, schools, and community partners into one unified, easy-to-navigate system embedded within Tamarac.gov.
Prior to implementation, event information was distributed across multiple calendars and platforms, creating duplication, scheduling conflicts, and information overload. Tamarac addressed this challenge by creating a single, intelligent source of truth that improves coordination internally while delivering a more personalized and accessible experience for the public.
Since deployment, the platform has delivered measurable results:
• Event page views increased by 45% in the first six months• Scheduling conflicts across departments decreased by approximately 30%• More than 60% of users engaged with recommended or featured events• Staff time spent on manual coordination decreased by an estimated 25%
The platform supports economic development, arts and culture, tourism, and community vibrancy by making it easier for residents and visitors to discover and participate in activities across the City. Automated integration with Parks & Recreation systems and cross-platform distribution to Tamarac TV and digital displays ensures consistent, timely communication without added staff workload.
This recognition from IDC highlights Tamarac’s continued commitment to innovation, digital transformation, and delivering intelligent, resident-centered solutions that strengthen community connection and long-term livability.
We thank IDC for this honor and congratulate our Information Technology team, Communications team, and City departments whose collaboration made this achievement possible.

Effective July 1, 2025, the City will discontinue the addition of fluoride to its potable water supply
Florida becomes second state to ban fluoridation of drinking water
On May 15, Florida became the second state to prohibit the addition of fluoride to drinking water supplies. The bill signed by Governor Ron DeSantis will take effect July 1, 2025. This action follows Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy, Jr. announcing a review of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) fluoridation recommendation, and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin’s stating that EPA would “expeditiously review new scientific information on potential risks of fluoride in drinking water” at an event in Salt Lake City, Utah in April. Florida follows Utah, the first state to institute a statewide ban on fluoride in drinking water.
It is still not clear what actions CDC and EPA plan to take on fluoride at the federal level. In addition to Utah and Florida, several other states have introduced bills during their 2025 legislative sessions that seek to prohibit or limit the addition of fluoride in drinking water, including Massachusetts and Louisiana, among others. Select municipalities have also begun taking action to ban fluoride. Twelve states have existing laws requiring fluoridation at some or all utilities, while in most other states fluoridation is a local decision.
